Re: UBUNTU 12.04LTS

Thanks a lot for the confirmation Andy ! I'm not going to touch this one, not with a long pole, and wait for the next LTS after that (at least!). BTW, I was also at the beach... just earlier :-) PS: anyone know where those lines in motd come from, and how I can avoid them ?... PPS: scratch that, fou...

Re: UBUNTU 12.04LTS

'scuse me if I bump this one... did I ask while everyone was at the beach, or is the answer maybe already here somewhere ?
(in which case, yell at me :-)

Has anyone upgraded from 10.04LTS to 12.04LTS in this way and survived ? :-)
TIA,
fp

Re: UBUNTU 12.04LTS

Hi folks, For the last couple of days, as I log in through ssh/xterm, after the usual welcome and before the prompt, I get a new message : New release 'precise' available. Run 'do-release-upgrade' to upgrade to it I'm wary of following that advice, as I believe this "new release" is 12.04L...

Re: Raspberry Pi

Thanks in advance Andy !

It seems a couple of guys have succeeded by tweaking ALSA, but it's not clear what distro they were using.

Then there would be the issues of a display of sorts, and a handful of buttons... early days, still :-)

Re: Raspberry Pi

Any of you guys blessed with Pi's have an USB device that plays sound, like external speakers or sound "cards" or DACs, by any chance ?

I'd really like to know if one of the distros can drive them out of the box...

(and no, haven't found the answer at rasperrypi.org :-)

Re: My latest project.

Glad to be of help... Now that my Ubuntu/SnapRaid server seems to be stabilized (crossed fingers :-), I may try my hand at one myself. I'm still using a good old WRT54 running Tomato, which is a lot better than Netgear firmware, and less hassle than WRT, but still not as transparent as I'd like it t...

Re: My latest project.

Never heard of a homebrew router before. They've been around for a long time, both in software and hardware form. Just about any board with low power consumption and two Ethernet ports, running Linux, is a router. Dedicated distros add easy of use and/or advanced functionality. I'm intrigue...

Re: Network Bragging.....

Im even surprise that untwisted cat5 even gave you 100Mbps, Its rated at 10Mbps O.o I would seriously consider upgrading your cabling infrastructure to cat6 if you have a Gigabit switch as you wont be getting the maximum potential out of your download speed. Your speed within you LAN will also be a...

Re: Network Bragging.....

If you are talking about running Cat 6 cable I highly recommend it as normal cat5e can only support a download speed of around 12.5MBps while cat6e will get you around 125MB It certainly makes sense to "do things right" in a new house, especially a large one (with basement, upper floors e...
