Cannot Ping or connect with putty Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Post by msgfreebird »

Just an FYI I am a newbie with Ubuntu or anything other than windows. I am trying to build a headless Ubuntu 12.04 server. I have followed your directions up to the point of installing putty. When I launch putty I get an error connection timed out. According to my router the ip address of the my server is 192.168.1.20. I try to ping the address and I get request timed out. What did I miss? I can ping my gateway from my laptop but not the server.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gregg and welcome to the forums

What happens when you access the server directly and try and ping your laptop or, say, google from it?

If you type ifconfig on the server does 192.168.1.20 come back?

Ian.
