logitech media server 14.04 lts

Just upgrade to 14.04 lts ubuntu server and ...... logitech media server was not working...... stumbled back into these forums and, again, Ian had the answer:
"NOTE: At the time of writing the released version of Logitech MediaServer does not work on Trusty Tahr 14.04LTS so use the "stable beta" instead. So please use: deb http://debian.slimdevices.com testing main"
I do not know how you keep up with all this.
Anyway, purged old mediaserver, installed the new stable beta as you suggest/instruct and now everything seems fine again..... at least I can get access to the Logitech Media Server Web interface again (it is busy rescanning my music library);
Meantime, I saw you recommended to someone that they do this:

$sudo apt-get install update-manager-core
</code>
before do-release-upgrade and after apt-get update (with sudos, of course)
I did not have this step - things seemed to go OK anyway; can you tell me what this does? Thanks again for all your help.
