Assistance with the VNC Gnome

Post by RuRat »

I try to perform tasks in the VNC gnome screen but some tasks are not allowed because I am not the admin

I followed the Guide to the T but obviously missed something

when i try to open synaptic or run the software updater i get a message that i am not allowed to perform action,

obviously a permission related issue.

how can i login with sudo permissions?

"Build a media server" - Trusty Tahr 14.04.1 LTS

I think I am having the same issues as RuRat with trying to run Gnome over tight VNC. When I try to start Synaptic from Applications -> System Tool -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager this messages shows in my putty window :
==== AUTHENTICATING FOR com.ubuntu.pkexec.synaptic ===
Authentication is required to run the Synaptic Package Manager
Authenticating as: tom,,, (tom)
Password:

If I try to open a terminal window using Ctrl + Alt + T nothing happens. If I use Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal I get a window but no command prompt.

If I try running "sudo synaptic" from the putty window I get :
no talloc stackframe at ../source3/param/loadparm.c:4864, leaking memory
error: XDG_RUNTIME_DIR not set in the environment.

(synaptic:1609): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

if "gksudo synaptic" from putty window:
(gksudo:1610): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.

I'm having this same exact issue trying to use the Synaptics tools. Has anyone found a resolution for this?

By the way the "Leaking memory" (no talloc stackframe at ../source3/param/loadparm.c:4864, leaking memory) error in your log above, I solved this by using instructions from here...

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2214042

apparently there is an issue in Samba.

If I find a resolution to the original VNC item, I'll post it. If anyone has it sooner, I'd appreciate the help!
Eistein said doing the same things and expecting different results is insanity, so why is it I do the same things with technology and get different results . . . I must be insane!
