Name change of computer

Post by Silvertop »

Hello all ... great forum
I have been creating a server following the site's instructions and found it very easy ... even for an old pensioner like me :D
The server was created as Shedserver but after I got it going and installed a number of programs and got Samba up to allow all Windows machines to view and interact I realised that the name really doesn't suit long term.
Can someone please give me the clues to change it's name to Studio39, and if this is possible, will it reflect the change through all installed apps and protocols??

As a complete noob to Linux I will appreciate any assistance I can get.

John,

2 files you need to change from memory:

Code: Select all

sudo vim /etc/hosts

Code: Select all

sudo vim /etc/hostname
Once you've made the changes power-down the server. Then reboot the router. Then power the server back up again. This will ensure the router picks up the change and broadcasts it.

good luck.

Pete.

Thank you for your prompt reply, Pete.

Having opened both files I can see where the Shedserver name is but do not know what the next step is.
Am I just to change the name? and if so how do I save the file? or is the change done realtime?

Like I stated in my original post I am really new to this OS

Any help much appreciated

Hi there

Once you have opened the file, press the insert key on your kyboard and navigate to the part of the file you want to change with your arrow keys.

Once finished press esc and enter :wq to save your changes :)
