32 bit or 64 bit, what's the difference?

Ian has talked me into installing Ubuntu 10.04, so last night I went to download it and it said I had to decide between 32 bit and 64 bit versions. So what is the difference between the 2? Why would I want one over the other within the context of a media/backup server?

Re: Tuner card / Cablecard?

1. A set-top box from the provider : usually when the require the box it's because they scramble the signal to prevent cable splicing, so you'll need to get an extra box from them to descramble for the computer. [/quote] In my case I can receive a signal without the set-top box, but it only receives...

Re: Tuner card / Cablecard?

It makes sense that the tuner card could not change the channel now that I think about it. You always set the TV to one channel and use the remote to changes channels on the set top box. I'd bet that I could only record one show at a time as well. Cox offers a DVR cable box for another $10 a month, ...

Tuner card / Cablecard?

I am trying to figure out what I am going to need to get MythTV to work as a DVR as Ian describes. I do not have a tuner card, but will likely get one if I can figure out how to get all this to work AND it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg!. My server will be in my media closet away from any TV. I am...

Re: Should I install Ubuntu 11.04?

Hmmm. This is sort of what I was thinking too. 10.04 seems to be a really good version. Being a sort of outsider in the Ubuntu world, my suspicion is that a new version every 6 months is almost too aggressive to "hit a home run" with every version released. BTW: When do they decide that a ...

Should I install Ubuntu 11.04?

I have been waiting for Ubuntu 11.04 to come out before starting my server build. But am beginning to wonder if that is the right decision. I guess the only reason I have been waiting is just so I can install the latest version. Would I be better off installing 10.04? Are there any big new features ...

Backup software recomendations

I have been thinking about using my ubuntu server as a backup server with the backup software running on the server rather than the individual client machines. It seems to me that it would be easier to administer if it were located in a central location. And since I am about the only one is my house...

Re: Is 3D TV here to stay?

Regardless of the technology, I am not a fan of 3D. To me it is a distraction from the story. It sometimes gives me a headache. I am thinking that no matter what technical improvements are made, this will not change. Maybe I am different than most people, but I watch movies/TV for the content of the...
